TR4/4A Adjusting the TR4A Fuel Gauge

I read up on the process and understand what to do but instead of draining the gas tank to make the sender float go to the bottom when adjusting for Empty, would it not be possible to just press the float down with an improvised tool or would that wreck the gauge somehow.? Karl
