Adding "modern" A/C to a TR6

Hey all,

My whole saga of trying to find something that isn't a modern lump of plastic to be my daily driver is starting to get depressing. My issue is that in Arizona, to be a DD, the car *must* have A/C.

I've been finding many nice TR6's for sale that i would have otherwise jumped on. So, I started researching through BCF last night, and then later on the intertubes. I ran across this aftermarket AC unit from BritishAC.com.

Has anyone installed one of these? If so are they happy with it? It's based around a Sanden compressor, so there's none of that York malarky involved. Yes, I know that a/c robs power, and all that fun stuff, but driving around in 100+ degree heat for 3+ months of the year without it is just masochistic.

Thanks!
Jody

Re: Adding "modern" A/C to a TR6

Hi Jody,
Here in Puerto Rico, we have a lot of the TR with a/c and is real simple, you can eliminate the direct fan and put an electric fan there is a fan eliminator kit with this you'll eliminate up to 16+ pound to your engine, the site you found is in Tampa and is like the original A/C but with modern compressor, It'll be a great ad for the hot summer, you'll not feel the loss of power with that A/C and the glass up.

pd, check for all holes coming from the engine to the cab or every time you end a ride you'll smell like a mechanic.

Hee hee... Those are great. I have plans to put one of those on my Studebaker eventually....

Can't imagine what it would look like on a TR6 with the top down.

Re: Adding "modern" A/C to a TR6

Or you could do like Red Green when he installed a home window unit in a window on the Possum Van.

Actually, the one you found looks pretty good. The only thing I would consider is how much it might reduce the engine cooling capacity.

Re: Adding "modern" A/C to a TR6

Now that's really funny. I've not watched a lot of Red Green, but I *do* believe I've seen that one. Wasn't his final dilemma not having enough extention cord?

So, in the midst of my TR6/MGB A/C modification research I got sidetracked. This happens a lot. More to come later today.

Jodi,

I added the British AC. Works great, looks like the original. Downside: Passenger loses legroom (they must extend their legs into the well like the driver). With a hardtop like I have, its even better.

I would highly recommend the unit. I have no connection with the company.

Think Jody went to the DARK Side

Re: Adding "modern" A/C to a TR6

Yep, wound up with a TR8.

This information, however; is being filed away in my TR6 notes.

Cars follow me home, and sometimes appear at my house unnanounced. So, for all I know there may be a TR6 in my near future. Stranger things have happened!

Though, this does mean that the Triumph count now surpasses the Jensen Healey count at my house, so equilibrium being what it is, I'll probably be given an MG next. Or something wierd, like a TVR.

A BETTER UPRATED HEATER!!!  :winner1:

Re: Adding "modern" A/C to a TR6

I don't have enough room under there for my legs now, let alone with that stuff mounted below the dash.
