Accelerator relay rods on RHD

OK,

This is one for any one with a RHD car, I have just noticed that the bushes on the relay rods are shot, and need replacing. They are situated on the bulkhead surounding the clutch housing and the rod passes from one side of the car to the other, over the top of the clutch housing and just behind the engine.
My query is, can they be replaced without lifting the engine.? and how do you get at 'em.

The engine is due to come out in 2013 for a rebuild and I will be able to replace them then for sure, but it would be nice if I could do them earlier.

They are difficult to remove with the engine out and next to impossible with the engine in but if you have inordinate patience it can be done. A poor design as the bolt heads on the firewall side are so close to the bell of the bracket. I would wait till you remove the engine to replace them unless you have a contortionist on hand. I have used a modified crowsfoot wrench along with standard wrenches and a 1/4 drive socket with the shoulder ground away. Kroil, or your favorite penetrant, should be applied for good measure along with a well placed smattering of heart felt expletives. There are now Teflon bushings offered which allow the rods to swivel like greased fiends. In the past I had a hard time finding any bushes for sale so remanufactured them myself with sintered bronze bushings and a heat set rubber matrix. A real hassle! I look forward to reading this thread to see the easy way explained w/ pictures, and stand ready to kick myself, as this entire maneuver can be most difficult yet appears so easy until undertaken.
