Accelerator linkage restoration

Thanks Dave!

That makes at least two of you who don't have me on "ignore". I guess I can shut down the motor and open the garage door now. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Cheers,
John

Hi Cutlass,
My ā€œlinkageā€ is basically gone. Downstream of the bushing in my last post, I made a new aluminum lever (attached to the gas pedal) that branches to a cable for the carbs and another link to the overdrive solenoid. Should be finishing that whole project in a week. Ambition permitting. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Paint, zinc plating, oil patina?

[/ QUOTE ]

The Guidelines say the throttle linkage is all unpainted (so zinc plated) but sketchy on whether this is just the bits in the engine bay near the carbs or the cross bar and brackets in the tunnel area. The gas pedal and linkage in the footwell gets painted black and I have evidence of black paint on the cross rod brackets, bushing cups and spring (this could be from a P.O. but I doubt it). I'm leaning towards painting the parts in the cross rod area black. Pretty hard to get in there for a look anyway. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Cheers,
John

Normally you wouldn’t get a conservative reply from me… I looked at Moss and BCS and didn’t see the bush housing for sale. Seems that JB weld would be a problem if you ever needed to replace the bushing. ( I know- who cares in 30 years) Still makes me want to think of a less permanent solution.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif I wonder what Kurt Tanner uses /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I've used the BCS nylon inserts on my BN7 and they really are smooth operating. I did find the bushing/bearing on the end of the carb throttle shaft that goes up against the firewall really bad. It adds to the "slop" in the linkage considerably. Are there any permanent soloutions out there?

Yep, permanent replacment of
them.---Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

Well now that all the ohs and ahs are over. Did any one notice the picture of the cross shaft in the article??. Did you notice the clamp bolt is missing in the linkage arm ??, Wonder whats holden it up?, Well if you look closely you will see it has been welded in place and based on my experience that is the only "permanent" way to keep it tight.---Keoke

An alternative that worked in my case rather than welding was to go up a bolt size after drilling. Dont over do it! This is a known weak link and welding would be a better permanent fix as Keoke points out. These things will slip and can be very annoying.

I found this thread most intresting. Problem, logical progression to resolution. Tipical of all these Fourms I supose. However, I learned a lot of stuff as well that I did not even know I was intrested in, Thanks.

Oh yea, don't think my baby will ever grow up to have one.

Wow, you got sharp eyes there. Mine is welded also, most likely from the PO.
The bushing houses on my car were painted black, as were the mounting brackets. You're right the "book" doesn't say what color/finish so I just cleaned them all up and painted black.
I installed the British Car Specialist bushings, part #AHB 8950T ($12.95 each) which only took about 2 minutes, they slide-on pretty easy. In fact, I think I'll glue them in this time to prevent any "slop" in the linkage. I have a picture in the "attachment" above the post you'll have to click on it to view.

Hi Keoke,
Is this the welded piece you’re referring to? I think mine came like that originally. As an aside, there seems to be some black paint on the underside of the bushing bracket.

HI Greg, I am glad you posted that. Regardles of what the standards say ifin you don't paint em thats just what they will evetually look like and yes they were Black.---Keoke /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Hi Keoke,

Mine are also welded and have no clamp bolts. I guess the factory started doing that when they ran out of bolts one day!

John Loftus; You the /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif but I doubt they were that smart, after all they just built them, they knew better en drive em too!!---Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angel.gif

As Geraldine would say, "the devil made me do it!" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Seriously though, it was a factory change. Starting with car/chassis 14378 (during BN7 and BT7 production) the accelerator relay shaft and lever were welded rather than bolted.

Cheers,
John

You could also argue that welding was standard, but when they got to Keoke’s Healeys, the welder would always break, so they had to bolt ā€˜em. Anyone buy that theory?
