accelerator cable

Novice Bruce. In restoring I have run my accelerator cable from carb through hole in firewall to gas pedal. Problem is when the gas is mashed the cable sheathing comes though the firewall. Not sure if there is suppose to be a clip where it goes through firewall or the hole through firewall has some type stop that is not there. Where the cable goes through the heat shield it just goes through hole with nothing clamping it. Can find nothinbg in manuals that address this. Anybody have this problem. Thanks Bruce

Bruce, I'm not familiar with the earkier cars, but my '79 goes through the top of the drives footwell. I would imagine a '66 would be similar. VB catalog shows the cable going through the heatshield, but pic is unclear if there is an adjustment device (similar to a bike cable) that would be there or not. This should give you something to look at till someone else that actually knows something chimes in. Hope this helps.

There ~should~ be a potmetal device with two "ears" to screw it to the firewall on the engine side which acts as a socket to hold the sheath and allow the cable to move the linkage. Check a Moss catalog diagram to see it.

This is an MGB illustration but it should be similar.

Doc, that's not how the Midget works - kellysguy has it right. There should be a hole about an inch in from the outside edge of the driver's inner fender. It is actually on the piece that slopes down from the firewall (same section the Master Cylinders bolt to) but it close to where the metal slopes up again (over the driver's side from tire) It's more than a hole - there is a small sleeve welded to the fender. The cable goes in this and then hooks on the end of the gas pedal. Beside the sleeve is a hole for a bolt that acts as the return for the gas pedal.

John-Peter has it correct.

Got it. That "socket" is part of the coachwork. Last time I was under th' bonnet of a Spriget has been a few years. Thought I recalled the removable thingie.

If "worn out", that foot-well "receiver" for the cable can be replaced with a nice piece from a bicycle shop from their brake-parts bin...the bike part has a threaded shaft so that it can be bolted in using a couple of nuts on each side of the bodywork. Works well!! plus, it provides an additional, "fine-tuning", adjustment point to keep slack out of the sheath and/or adjust cable length!
