I was cleaning up the pistons I took out of the TR4A block, and I picked a big chunk outta the parts cleaner pan. I thought, wow, that ring was broken.... no wait... that's a ring land! Crud!
I guess that goes with the marks I found on the big end of the number 2 rod. Looks like a PO in the distant past tried to extract that piston without taking the ring ridge off the top of the cylinder.(The head was removed when I got the car) I took them off yesterday in prep to remove the pistons. I was being very careful because I planned to use the pistons for my rebuild.
I'm betting the noticeable play in the crank bearing on #2 was causing a good knocking noise, and was probably the reason the engine was pulled out of service.
All this to say, now I need a replacement 86mm piston. Stock fare for a 66 TR4A.
Anybody? anybody?
