A Question For The Ladies

My wife loves our 77 B with one exception, she hates having her hair blown around. What type of head gear do the rest of you ladies wear when you ride or drive with the top down? Is a wind blocker a good investment to save a ladies locks?

Kindest Regards
John & Debbie Back

My ex used to just wear a hat with a hair tie keeping her hair from pummeling her to death.

Watch some of the old James Bond flicks.... She needs one of those scarfs to tie over her hair. hehehehe

Windblocker is absolutely the best investment I've made for my MG's - in fact, I have 2! Jerri & I can ride along at highway speed & have a normal conversation and her hair's not blowing everywhere.....get in touch with Tom Rynne & buy one! If you're down my way, we'll put one on your car & let you experience it!

My wife has gone through a few. The scarf was fine at lower speeds but had to be held at anything above surface street speed. A friend of hers uses a scarf in their classic Porsche with good success by folding a square in half, draping it over her head, then wrapping back behind her neck and tieing it there.

A ball cap worked pretty well but wasn't good if she wanted to take it off during the day, and it always threatened to fly off at high speed. Remember we drive in all kinds of convertibles, not just MGBs, and some are far more gusty than others!

She found a "cute" English driving cap that she adores and has worn it quite a bit. It stays put and keeps her warm in chilly weather. We never put the top up so this is a plus!

The latest she found is by far her favorite, and very popular in various styles for men and women in the antique cars due to their "in your face" kind of wind. There is a drawstring to hold in on your head in any kind of wind which has proven quite useful. It also allows her to hang it behind her neck if she needs to take it off in the car, without risk of losing it in the wind.

Here is a photo showing the style, which is called a Tilley Hat. Also here it a photo showing that it's very versatile, working in both extreme heat (110+ degrees) and cold.

We have leashes for our hats. Two alligator clips and a string. Clip one end to the collar, the other to the hat. A tip learned from the boating crowd. There's a strangely similar thread over on mgexperience you may want to check out .

Most of the gals around here just use a ball cap. In fact my ex refused to drive in the B with me if I didn't put the top up. WHAT?!?! We live in southern Kalifornia and you want to put the top up?

Good thing my little girls aren't so "girly" & don't have a problem donning a ballcap.

Wife has always used a scarf.

Many of my friends wear a draw string hat. Me - I got a Healey haircut so that my hair just isn't long enough to go anywhere. In the winter I wear ear warmers.

Agatha has made me a proud "tossled hair beauty!" Not sure anybody would agree with that but I sure do feel better.

In the Marines, we called them boonie hats. I have one that I wear to keep the top of my skull from blistering. I still wear my hair to Marine regulations. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

We have one, Chuck almost insisted. I can't recall ever using it. I don't want to store it in the car and I like the wind, the more the better.

Buy her a ball cap or a Tilley if her hair gets messy. I wear a ball cap or a doorag half the time, other times I just spend 30 minutes combing out the knots afterwards.

The windblocker does reduce noise and makes conversation much easier, and reduces wind some, not entirely of course.

Steve, that looks like a Tilley.

My doorags are much cuter. Union Jack, circa 70s hippie peace & love and flowers, cute skull & crossbones (pink of course)...

I'd never wear a skullcap like that picture Bret!

And ummm, Pat... we just spent 3 1/2 days driving all around upstate NY...

Thank you JB, it is indeed a Tilley hat. And the reason you don't need a hat is that your hair is short! Long hair has a way of blowing in your face in older convertibles, which are not so slippery to the wind as newer ones. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Oooo? A Skull & crossbones? Ya know you're just a tank top & a black set of leather chaps away from being a biker chick. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

'smits would clip her tailbone-length hair "up" and stuff it under a beret. Last weekend she went "Ramona" on me and sent the leftovers to "Locks of Love". This is the second time she's done this in a decade. She still wears the beret.

My custom is the issue boonie hat as my SPF-400, with "high-n-tight" as a hairstyle (with what's left!).
