A quest for all gear-heads

Fellow gear-heads, we are on a quest; someone, somewhere must know where to find, for want of a better description, the tarred-felt sound deadening material used on our Isetta. It may be on other German cars of that era (1957) or, recognizing that the Isetta represents the quintessence of it’s species, might have been taken up by such copy-cat firms as Ferrari, Aston Martin, Bentley, or even an American manufacture. You can see the material at:

Please don’t tell us (just yet) to use some new-fangled stuff off the space shuttle, or made from the belly down of a Northumberland pigmy duck (that’s why no one has ever heard their tummies rumble….it’s that good) because this is a restoration. And please, we are not judging those of you who like your cars quiet and cool inside, really! Someday we may build a driver, but for now we are looking for original. The quilted felt (?) is around 1.5mm thick, and with the tarred back around 4mm thick. Any help will be met with dignified glee, and rounds of huzzah.

Tarred felt isn't as uncommon as you might think. Do a google search on "tarred felt" and you'll see what I mean. It's still used quite a bit on roofing.

That was the first thing I thought when I read tarred felt. However, roofing felt (that I've used) is highly compressed stuff. I imagine you can get stuff 4mm thick, but it's probably too compressed to be used as sound deadening material.

Brian,

After the amazing community support you got with Team Sprite and BJ, maybe getting BMW onboard with the project isn't a lofty goal. I'm sure they'd love the good press your last project generated. They must also know where to find this stuff.
