So I'm going through Anderson and Moment yet again and come across this statement(page 70).
"At the outside rear of the front wheel arches, two rubber buffers (like those that support the hood(bonnet)) were fastened over the lower edge, held in place with ..........etc".
What possible funtion do these buffers serve? What am I missing here?

I believe those buffers were to keep the inner and outer fenders from clanging on each other on rough roads.

I believe you're right Greg. I believe they were held in place with split rivets. I believe they were painted body color too, but I'm not confident in that statement.
 
Barely visible in this picture, as they're covered in a textured undercoating and painted:

Speaking of puzzling details, anyone want to take a guess at the reason for the rivets on the top of the headlight rims.
 
Here is a pic off eBay. Shows 2 rubber spacers very clearly.

Finding the part in your picture is a quite a good puzzle in itself - but I did find one of them. I still can't fathom what purpose it/they serve(s) at this/these locations.

On some cars there was a tab rivited to the headlight rim that was used to help lock the rim to the headlight bucket. My MGA's have that tab on them. Have a good day!

John, Thanks for the suggested reason for the rivet in the headlight rim. I checked my original rim and did not find any tab attached. Just the rivet. So maybe they were like the port holes on the 50's Buicks...for decoration only.
 
I just found a photo that shows the two rubber buffers on the wheel well.

1 O'clock and 3 O'clock on the front wheel.
They are painted body color.

Maybe the tab had broken off?
 
My original headlight rings on my '58 BN6 has the tabs as shown below:

Thanks Duane for the picture. I don't see any evidence of a tab being there, but I now remember both of the original rims were damaged 40 years ago when some one backed into me....so these would be replacement rims from that time and maybe they discontinued the tab but kept the rivet for the look. Again, thanks for taking the time to answer this question I have had for many years.
