I take take great pains to compensate for my
almost complete lack in mechanical skills and auto
knowledge.

I faithfully make and tag every part I remove from
my car and place it on a work board.

Home stretch on the passenger side front suspension
total rebuild. Almost ready to install the hub/disc
and caliper and I find a hard rubber piece I cannot
account for.

If I didn't know better, I'd think DPO Pedro stopped by
and added it to my work board to mess me up.

It looks kinda familiar to me but I can't quite place it.
Please, someone tell me I don't have to remove the freakin'
coil sping to install this part I missed?

What is the rubber part and where does it go??

/bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/iagree.gif There are two of them on each shock. They reside at the top part of the shock where it comes up through the top of the spring housing. The upper part of the spring housing gets sandwiched between these two rubbers. One is underneath, the other is up top where the nut is that holds the shock in place. In both instances they are backed up by a large cupped washer. You may have to remove the shock to see if the bottom one is the one you left out, but you won't have to disassemble the whole shootin' match. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif
 
Nope, I think it has nothing to do with the shock.
I ordered new shocks with spare mounting sets in case
I screwed up the installation.

The unknown part is a single piece and would not fit
anywhere on the shock.

Not item No. 6 either:

I used the entire set of upgraded lower and
upper A-Arm bushings. The flange is very different
,as well.

So who will solve this mystery?

I've seen the bloody part before, I just don't
remember where. Frustrating.

With my luck, if I leave it out, a front wheel will go spinning off the car into the ocean while taking
bend in the ocean road turn at 70 mph.

Dale, That certainly looks like a shock bushing, but for a Chevy!
It's not a sway bar link bushing, is it?
I don't see anything resembling that configuration on the exploded view I posted, but I'm not really a TR6 guy.

Is the bushing that you show for the example of the shock new or used? That is usually what they look like after a few years of compression and use.

It's easy enough to loosen the shocks from the top and drop it down to be sure that you didn't miss the bottom bushing under the tower. It would be obvious if it were missing on the top, but not so underneath.

The center hole does grow after use. The new bushings fit snugly over the stem of the shock.

Maybe I'm wrong, but that's what it looks like from this view and you can check it without a ton of hassle.

Paul, that's what I'm thinking as well! Dale, the bush you show is new and over time they take on the flatter oval shape of the washer permanently.

This is the tracking device that I bolted on to your lower wishbone so that I could locate the car when unattended and make improvements as needed.
Please replace it on the wishbone so I will be able to locate your car.

My Lord, you guys must think I have not only no
auto mechanic experience whatsoever but that I
am also completly lacking in native intelligence as well.

I can comprehend the difference between new parts sitting
inside a plastic bag I just opened ( that I removed from
A Moss Motors cardbpard box I just opened).......

and a pile of DPO Pedro offal I just stripped off and
threw into a trash bin. I ain't that lame nor that far
gone into geezerville that I would re-install DPO Pedro's
junkyard parts and throw out my suspension new parts.

Here's another photo for the parts gurus to ponder. What is
this left over part? I know I have seen one before in my
repairs of this beast.

Nope KM- See my photo of the new sway bar vertical
link new bushings above.

I have the two new rubber bushings for the sway b
where it attaches to the radiator skid plate.
They are both simple cylinders.

The left over piece did not come my sway bar.
But I HAVE seen one before, that's what is bugging me.
I have seen that part before.

It looks like the rubber foot off of a table top item (microwave oven) or tool. Does not look like it came off of your car.

Dale,

I'm sure that you can decide which is new versus old, but we can't from the pictures that you took.

If, what you have just shown in the later post is a "one month old" Moss shock bushing, I can guarantee you that it did not start it's installed life looking like that or it would look a piece of smoked salami in the next 11 months.

I still think it's either:

A. A new shock bushing that is an extra that just appeared, or

B: You forgot one of the inner bushings that fits up inside the shock tower.

BTW, those bushings are only supposed to be tightened down securely, not crushed until flat.
