my '79 MG midgets body is in great shape except for the trunk lid. I have just ordered one which will be delivered shortly.

I do not think the paint is original on my car soooo.... now for my question

how can I buy the right color paint to match my car if I have no idea of the paint code??

If you can get anything off the car as a sample for the computer, most good auto paint suppliers can match it pretty darn well for you. I've never found one that could do it on the car though.
 
general consensus is that the easiest piece to take off if the secondary hood latch - one pin
 
Preferably use a section that hasn't had much exposure to the sun. If that is unavailable, polish the area you plan to have scanned.
You will also want to find out what color primer was used under the paint. Primer can lighten or darken your final results.
You may have to buff out or hand rub the old paint to get it to match the new.
Don't expect perfect results going into it, because of unknown factors such as mfr. of existing paint etc. will make it difficult to get the match you want.
