A.H. MKII BT7 Coil Spring Free Length

Can anyone give me the free length of the coil springs on a '62 BT7. Mine have the correct red painted stripe on them and I am wondering if I should replace them as I now have the entire front suspension apart. Also I purchased new shocks from Moss and now read that I have to make a mod. to the inner fender. Can some one get me a photo of this modification.Angus thanks you!

Hi & welcome to the forum,
I can't answer the spring length question. If the two springs appear to be matched & their lengths ars nearly the same, they are probably ok. As you know, the red stripe springs were the latest version of their front springs.

The shock modification is because Moss sends out rebuilt shocks that have MG shock bodies.

I would seriously consider returning them to Moss & having your old shocks rebuilt by Peter at:
https://www.nosimport.com/shoxcatalog.htm

They do a better than new rebuild at very reasonable cost & their work carries a very long guarantee.

If you are concerned about the springs, it would certainly be better to use the correct shocks also. If you no longer have your original shocks, consider finding correct used shocks that are suitable for rebuilding.

Best of luck,
D

Thanks for the response Dave.My old shocks are sitting on my bench. The reason I did not go for a rebuild is that the mounting holes are very oblonged (sp.)I read some where that this made the shocks unsuited for rebuild.I further looked at buying rebuilt shocks and was advised against it. Hence my purchase of "new" ones.

I appreciate the advice,
Angus

I would still check with Peter. My old shocks had the worn mounting holes rebushed with steel inserts. Actually superior to the original soft aluminum mounts.

BTW, Peter's rebuilds are better than any "new" shocks. He installs actual good seals on the spindles & fits everything to perfection.

If you wish to modify your car to fit the MG shocks, ask Moss exactly what must be done.

Angus -

You got bad advice.

Peter at worldwide will rebuild your old shocks to a much higher standard than buying "new" ones.

He has lots of cores around so even if your core is no good, he will send you a good shock.

Thanks Dave and Alan.I should probably have found this site before buying anything, however, half the fun is getting there!
