A Fun night

My wife and I took the Stag out for a drive the other evening and we got the usual reaction: some waves, lots of smiles, people striking up conversations in parting lots. My wife enjoys the attention her car gets everywhere we go, but the icing on the cake was what happened when we stopped for gas:

After a quick conversation with the guy at the next pump, we see the attendant step out of booth and call over to us

"Boy she's a real beauty"
"Thank you" my wife replys
"You've really got her fixed up nice"
"We try to take care of her" my wife responds again
"You don't see many MGs that look that nice"
"No, you sure don't" my wife says with a perfectly straight face as I duck so he doesn't see me cracking up laughing

No offense Jaybird, but you got to admit it was funny!

My standard response when they say, "Boy, that shur is a nice MG ya got thar."

I tell them it's not an MG, it's a Ferrari!

That shuts them up quick. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

That is absolutely fantastic. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The other marque the Stag is often confused for is Jaguar - I guess we should all be happy that they at least recognize them as British! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/england.gif

i guess my experiences haven't been too bad, but close friends keep trying to call it a TR6, and one even called it a GT4. close enough i guess.

I have had some uniformed teenagers think my TR8 was a Ferrari. I felt sorry for them. But if I really want to confuse people then I show up in my MkII Cortina. People either know what it is or they are completely clueless.

I do not mind what they call my TR6. When they are impressed enough to try and compliment I accept and give a gentle correction if and when the occasion fits.

Last week I had a city bus pull along side and the driver leaned out the window and asked what kind of car it was and give a thumbs up as I drove away.

I smile and drive away while they wish they could.

I used to get a lot of "nice car"s at gas stations with my clapped out TR4A, I usually responded "thanks" then muttered "you haven't looked at it very closely, have you?"
That thing was a beater.

I know this is a triumph forum....But....I've gotta say an MGA gets more attention than my TR6....or maybe thats cuz it's brown? TR6 gets plenty of 'nice car's but in an MGA I've had people chase me down to ask what it is.....It's probably even better when my wifes out with hers.

Shawn,

Try owning a MKIII Cortina - it's been called a Hornet,
Comet,etc.
When they ask me "What kind of car is it",I just tell
them that it's a "Yellow Car".

After paint but before I put the letters on, my Triumph naming was also fun-- According to folks, my car was a Jaguar (thank you!), MG, or a Sprite. Some got close (eg TR4). What I thought was most strange was when I gently explained what the car was and its year, some told me I was wrong!

At least they are able to guess at a model. Usually people just look at my MkII with blank stares. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/square.gif

I like the idea that my '57 TR3 doesn't have letters. Keeps them guessing.

Driving a 77 Lancia HPE is interesting also. "What kind of a Honda is that?" or "So, thats a Toyota then?" The car has side stripes and Lancia in script. I hope people don't think I named my car Lancia. I don't want to be confused with the folks who name their cars "Binky" or their pickups "Bad Ass"

Maybe he was serious... You don't see many MGs that look as nice as a Triumph - period. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif
