A fitting story for Veterans Day

Didn't the Leyte Gulf come to be called "Iron Bottom Sound"? I know the Samuel B. Roberts played a part in the same battle. And the Japanese commander decided to bug out, not being certain just what was coming next.

Nope, that was the area around Guadalcanal and Salvo Island in the Solomons due to the large number of American and Japanese ships sunk there during battles to control the area.

Mike is correct Iron Bottom Sound is Savo Sound and is between Savo Island and Guadalcanal.

Yes, The Samuel B. Roberts also was in Taffy 3 and was lost at Samar just as Johnston was.

Very cool that they found either the Johnston or the Hoel. Being an Okie I hope it is Johnston, as its commander was from here and as the article says he was the first Native to receive the CMH from the Navy.

Thanks for the clarification, guys.
