HI
Trying to figure out how good this transmission is.
It has been stored for 30 + years. It was setting in the passenger seat of a 1959 Sprite I bought for parts way back then. This was an extra transmission as the one in the 59 is still where it belongs.
My question is how much side play the out put shaft and the input shaft should have.
It is close to 12 th by just feeling with hand.
Here is a link to the photo

Thanks sim

The bits inside look nice and clean!! Are there any chipped/missing teeth? Side play should be minimal!! new bearings could solve to much slop!

I thought it looked preaty good just from the wee small pic.

Wonder what the syncros look like?

Hi
It all looks good to me too. No missing teeth and the syncros look good.
I just do not know how much side play there should be.
I think I should replace the real seal

Rear seal replace of course they are cheep and easy.

Has a scroll seal on the front, no problem.

No clue on the side play but from condition I can see it is bound to be just fine.

I have gotten out the repair manual and it does not say anything about side play on input or out put shafts
It does say that early ones had bushes for the third motion shaft and later ones had needle bearings.
I do not know the car or the year of the gear box in the photo. Would there be a number on the gear box that would give a year?
I guess the bushes worked fine for 50 years.

There is no way that box has been in use for 50 years. It is relatively new. Not a mark on those gears.

Hi
This box ( in picture)has not seen service in over 30 years. been in storage.
the one that has the 50 years of use is the one that needs replacing and it is still in the car.

Clean it very well and use it. Redo all the gaskets and seals.
