87 XJ6 Stalling Problem

I have started having an intermittent problem in which the car runs rough and then stalls. It is not always when the temp is at 90 or just at the end of the green arc, it has happended after driving less than 4 miles from cold when the needle was only about half way to normal. Other times, it occurs after making several stops where it is shut off, sits a few minutes and on to the next errand. When it happens, it won't start until it sits 20 minutes or so and then starts right up. When it starts, it behaves as if it had been flooded. The stalling does not happen abruptly. It happens with a loss of throttle response and misfires for about 10 seconds before stalling.

I normally use injector cleaner every few fill ups. Cleaner had not been added to this tankful though. It happens usually when the tank is about half full. I would have expected the problem to start right after fill up if it were the gas.

The way it behaves is similar to the ignition module failures on 77 - 79 Fords with 351 or 429 v8's. It was the ignition module that developed a fault over time that was heat reactive on the Fords. Let it sit a while and it would start right up and not act up again until days later. The problem is very similar to that.

I started with the ignition amplifier which was ratty and had dirt and oil inside the openings on the backside. After replacing the amplifier, It still does it.

If this were a throttle potentiometer problem, wouldn't the problem be consistent rather than intermittent?

Is this a MAP sensor problem?

By the time I get it home, the problem usually seems to have gone away until next time.

Suggestions anyone?

My 85 XJ6 exhibited a very similar problem which I eventually traced to defective vacuum lines routed to and from the accumulator located under the intake manifold.---Fwiw---Keoke

I pulled the O2 sensor and it looked like it had a hard life. I swapped it out and have not had a repeat of the problem thus far.

I spoke too soon. The same problem has started again.

Any thoughts on why it goes away in ten or 15 minutes? If it is one of the temp sensors, wouldn't the problem remain until the engine cools significantly?

What are Map Sensor problems Like for the Series III?
