87 and still playing strong!

Tuesday night a friend and I went and saw the Dave Brubeck quartet. Brubeck is 87 (about to celebrate his 65 wedding anniversary) and still plays like always. The band was great, the youngest in his late 50s, the others maybe in their 70s. A great night of music, and proof that music is one of those things we can still do as the rest of the body ages away. No need to give any allowances for their age at all.

Dave mentioned that they were flying out the next morning to play the Monterey Jazz festival -- he played the first one 50 years ago!

"Time Out" was my introduction to jazz, and still one of my all-time favorite recordings.
 
There was a blues performer who came through Calgary in the spring (last name Honeywell I think?), people think he's over 90 years old and still performing... I was told that he is essentially the last link to the old style 1930's southern blues who is still alive

Unfortunately I was unable to attend the show, perhaps the last time he'll ever come to Calgary? Likely... All the cool things I miss...

We lose so many each year, not too many of the old greats left.

Vince, thanks for that link. They did a great version of Take 5 as the encore at the show Tuesday, drum solo was fantastic. One of my favorite tunes (though, I always have to point out when we play it that Paul Desmond wrote it).
 
Blue Rondo a la Turk rocks. Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond. Cannot get enough.
 
Brubeck was here in Oklahoma City last spring. The real occasion was to perform his Mass with the symphony and our local choir. They also did half the show with just the quartet. It's just not every day you get three standing ovations at the fancy concert hall. Except that Dave walked a little slower, you'd never guess their ages. And Bobby Militello is really great but there will probably never be another Paul Desmond. He was my inspiration to take up the saxophone many years ago.
 
I'm too young to have seen the original quartet, but my music partner saw them back in the day. That would have been something to see!
