Hiya fellas,

I am over here from the triumph forum. I have some questions about 86 XJ6's. I am trying to get a car for my girlfriend and think I may have found a good one. it is a fixer uper on the interior needs some leather work on the rear seat needs a new headliner the veneer and console needs to be replaced. Needs a new windshield gasket and rea window gasket. Other then that it seems good, has a rebuilt tranny in it and has 117,000 miles on the engine. The price also seems right for the car $2500. What should I be wary of with this car? How long do those 6 cylinders hold up, how are the electronics, etc. Any advice I can get would be great. thanks guys.

Cheers

Waltesefalcon:
The XK engine is pretty reliable, as long as it,s never been overheated and the radiator is in good shape. Look for rust everywhere, if it isn,t in a dangerous place and you are looking for something to fix up XJ6's are pretty nice. They can be very expensive for rust and cosmetics. The interior will be expensive if you use leather, but vinyl or leatherette replacements are for the drivers. Look at the car as you would a Triumph. The electronics to the engine are reliable, but sheduled maintenance is a plus. The rest of the electrics, age is usually the culprit. Check out XKS.com and Welshent.com for pricing on repairs. Good luck!

Walter, I recommend the series 111 XJ6 as one of the best that Jag has had. I think that some day it will be a collectible classic. They seem to have great longevity if they are well maintained. If they have not been taken proper care of or have been abused by unqualified mechanics, they can be junk. The cosmetics are very expensive to restore wood or leather. Rust on the monocoque body is fatal CANCER. The best advice I can offer you is to get one in very good condition and not a fixer upper. You will save money in the long run and be much happier with the Jag. The price of entry into a good series 111 is about $5000 unless you are very lucky. Best regards Jack Farrington

The most trouble I ever had with one was diagnosing fuel injection system faults

Oh, the oil filter is a major PITA. intake manifold gets in the way. They are fairly dependable but make absolutely sure to put the hold downs on the valve guides (exhaust side only). https://www.xks.com Good site for Jaguar stuff (and carb parts that Victoria Brit can't get).
