86 Jaguar XJ6?

Hello everyone I am new here and new to Jaguar. My mom has an 86 XJ6 in very nice shape. She is looking to sell it so I want to take it to replace my 86 BMW 528e with over 320,000 miles. The car is in very nice shape. A few lil rips in the leather is the only inside flaw. The car has no A/C, is the compressor common to go on these cars? The heat is contantly blowing it will not shut off, any ideas? And lastly there is a whining noise sounds like the power steering, mom said it sounded like that when she first got the car and she had the steering rack replaced and now the sound is back after only 4 months. Could it be another rack? Or maybe a pump how can I tell?
I love the car, looks better then my BMW. The interior and paint are nice colors and in way better shape. The car drives soooo smoothe. Does not handle like the BMW but I will not be doing anything with the car except driving to work so I will sacrafice handling for a silky smoothe ride.

Hi Sal,

Welcome to the forum......Sorry I won't be much help to you on the technical questions, although I rather suspect that the issue with the power steering is probably the pump.

The problem with the heat sounds like a bad switch or a relay.

You will get all the answers you need in due course when our tech gurus check in, but if you keep tabs on the maintenance on the Jag (it's not as bullet-proof as your Bimmer) you should have a long and happy relationship with this car. These were some of the best cars that Jaguar ever built, and are without a doubt the best-looking. Rust is the biggest issue with them, so if yours is rust -free you are ahead of the game.

Thank you for the help. I will look into the relay or switch, have any idea on what the name of the switch is? The bimmer was nice, I got it for $300 and I work for BMW so I did about $5000 of work well a lot less my price to get it to where it is. The body paint looks like crap the inside is trashed. My mom will give me the car free. I am moving from FL to TN and to transport my car it will be $600-700. I can sell it for $800-1000 and get the jag and fix it up.

The Jag will be worth fixing. There are several companies that specialise in parts for these cars, so availability should not be an issue. The real knowledge-men on here will check in from time to time, and they will be able to give you an accurate assessment of what you will need to fix. Stay tuned.

The heat is a bit more complicated than you might guess. If you switch from hot to cold on the temp knob, is there a whirring sound and does where the air comes out of change? You know, from defrost ducts, to center vent to floor vents? This system uses a servo, located on the right side of the console to switch vent opening, internal flaps in the heater box, and vacuum switches that open flaps and turn on and off the water valve. The servo motor is driven by an amplifier hidden under the left side of the console. If the amp goes bad, the servo won't switch, but if the servo fails.... same thing. look on ebay for a FACTORY shop manual set, and buy a hanes manual as well. Sometimes you can find copies of the service training manual for the climate control system. It is easy enough to fix, but harder to explain here .

As to the steering, look for leaks. The reman racks are not so good these days. Often buying the cheapest possible part will come with early failure. I always replace the Hi pressure hose at the same time. The pump is GM and really easy to rebuild, and the kits are cheap. Good luck, after you drive the Jag a little while, you will never go back!!

I only drove the car for about 10 miles and didn't really touch the buttons just the seat. My mom lives in NC. I will ask her about the switch though. I will also get me the haynes book and copies of factory shop manuals. Thank you everyone for the help. I joined another Jag forum (the first one I found that wasn't websensed at work). I posted the same question a few days ago still nothing. Seems like noone even posts on there. This site is GREAT. I am very excited about picking up the Jag. I will probably get it around Christmas. I was also looking at the Checy V8 swap, I was thinking a nice FI LT1 motor (I really miss racing my stang).
As far as the heat thing is there a fuse I can just pull for now that will stop the heater from blowing any air?
Once again thank you everyone.

not to be sending you away from this forum, but theres one i got to thats called jag-lovers.org, these guys are hard core, make sure you are in the xj6 part, not the xj40, they have helped me to no end, and your ac compressor is a gm a6 compressor, so easily replaced

Thanks for the other link but it is websensed at work for some reason. After I wmove I will have my house computer back so I will definatley check it out then thank you.
