'85 XJ6 Rear Hub Qustion

My '85 XJ6 w/65,000 original miles just started making a strange noise in the right rear...find its in the hub (aluminum)...the bearing seems to be seizing...can I replace just the bearing or must the entire aluminum hub be replaced (I've got another complete rear suspension if necessary)?

If just the bearing is bad, that's all you need to do. But if the bearing has froze and spun, you will need to replace the housing and/or the stub axle.

But it may not be the bearing. Check the housing for cracks.

Bearings can be replaced. A little tricky on the home press, but with thinking and spacers can be done. Not hard otherwise. While you are at it replace the lower little fulcrum bearings too.

Got the hub assembly out from under it....bearing appears to be sticking...think I can get it out...wil check the hub asembly itself to make sure its not damaged...

Now, why in the world would they use aluminum there?

Weight

Aluminum aka Aluminium - lighter than steel, but strong as steel. Fabulous qualities, even used as solid fuel in the Space shuttle for the Booster Rockets. Many more qualities. Somewhere between Silver and Gold.

remove the round black plastic cover shown in the picture and inject grease with a grease gun, usually takes care of it.

Good to know about that place for greasing....I've got lots to learn about Jag's...when I talked with the local British car repair place everybody recommends, they said they'd had a history of replacing aluminum hubs themselves when the bearings go bad as the aluminum gets damaged so easily.....I've an extra hub on my parts car just in case.

Yep Tony and there are about ten more back there to go along with that one. When you get it sorted out bin all the others and replace with poly bushings.---Fwiw--Keoke

Good idea, any contact info on where to find one?

YTHanks, I went to "buy it now"...but, the way that seller has his auction set up, its asking for credit card information my paypal account doesn't need to complete the transaction...but he won't allow me to complete the buy unless I provide that info!

Tony, I went through the motions to see if I got the same message, but I didn't. The funny thing is, I inadvertently bought it!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/blush.gif /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/blush.gif
I'll send it on down when I receive it!

K - lemme know how much to paypal you...thanks!

My paypal knows how to get money from my checking account without a credit card (mt paypal usually has enough in it to cover most purchases & does for that little one) & does it quite often - don't have a credit card linked to it on purpose but his auction required a credit card linked to paypal

That's really strange, because it handled me just like any other of my PayPal transactions. I usually keep a small balance in my account for such deals, too.
Oh, well, no harm. I expect I'll get it in a few days, and I'll shoot it your way. It's coming from Ft. Lauderdale.
Jeff

what?

when one pays an eBay seller through Paypal, the seller does not need to know anything about the Buyer's credit card or checking acct., Paypal handles that part of the transaction, the Seller gets an e-mail saying "you have received money from The Great Pumpkin" and that should be enough.

If it was me, I would report the incident to eBay. You were not paying with a credit card, you were paying with Paypal. If the Seller was demanding credit card information, then he wanted to charge your credit card directly, and this sounds to me like he is trying to avoid Paypal's fees when a Seller receives money, while advertising that he "accepts" Paypal. Very transparent. Avoidance of fees is prohibited at eBay.

More important info.::

go back and Read the description of the item, it says the item is a "copy". If it is a "copy" of the original disk, you are buying illegal merchandise. The original Service & Parts Manual sold by Jaguar Dealers and legit vendors comes in a nice case with a full sleeve. I would ask the Seller if indeed the case and sleeve are included. If not, I would contact Paypal and put a "Stop Payment" and cancel the whole thing. Report the Seller to eBay and to the Jaguar-Daimler Heritage Trust.

Then go to the following link who sells the real thing for about the same amount of money:
