We saw the Arizona when we went to Hawaii years ago.
It was really hard to get the true feeling of what happened,as we were
on the same shuttle as a crowd of Japanese tourists.

And it came close to not being there. In the 50s before being declared a memorial there was serious discussions in Washington about removing the remainder of the ship along with the Utah to free up berthing space. In the end, didn't happen but the cold war might have done away with what so many visit.

A couple of photos of USS Oklahoma, BB 37. During the attack on Pearl Harbor Oklahoma took at least four torpedoes in her port side and capsized. 429 souls perished with her, some men were trapped in air pockets in the capsized ship. It took twenty-five hours of work with air chisels to cut holes through the hull and bulkheads, but, eventually, 32 trapped men were saved. Oklahoma was too damaged to be returned to duty like most of her sisters, but unlike Arizona and Utah she was eventually refloated in 1943 and sent to the breakers in 1947. In route from Hawaii to California she broke her cables during a storm and sunk.
