September 2, 1945. The Surrender of the Japanese Empire ends most WW2 hostilities . FDR died on April 12, 1945; most German military units surrendered to the Allies by May 8. To me, it is immensely sad that FDR didn't live to see the war's end. He and Churchill - and millions of people - had been working to end hostilities since the late 1930s.

A complete treaty of peace with Japan wasn't signed until 1952 in San Francisco, which legally ended WW2. A final treaty of peace with an "almost reunited" Germany wasn't signed until September 12, 1990.
