Hello,
I have friend that has a 78 Spitfire. Would someone have a pic of the carb area with the air filter removed? There is a rubber hose coming from the fire wall side that is just dangling. I can't see what it connects to unless it originally went to a front tube coming out of the front of the carb. It does not presently reach the tube, but it may have been cut at some point. Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Kevin

I am not quite sure what hose you are talking about, my 79 has a ton of them all over the place, Can you post a photo of your friends car and then maybe we can help more.
Could be a part of the old fuel system that's been bypassed or part of the emission control system. On my car the previous owner disconnected a lot of stuff and just left bits and
pieces hanging about.

That is what I am seeing-a number of things disconnected, and in some cases seemingly going to nothing. This sort of looks like smog apparatus to me. I have included a pic with the air filter off. image.jpeg You can see the hose sitting at the bottom of the carb.

If i'm not mistaken, that hose was the vapor return line to the fuel tank. was possibly connected to one of the carbon canisters bu the radiator.....if the hose or line get blocked it can cause issues with the fuel not getting to the carb.

I was mistaken, Don. It does look like it is the vapor return line. What puzzles me is that there is a clamp at the end of the line. It is too short to hook up to anything. Is it dangerous to leave it disconnected like it is?

I have mine disconnected and open to atmosphere...the fuel cap is a sealed type...if you plug the vapor return you can cause a vacume in the fuel tank. fuel pump removes fuel and no air to replace the lost fuel....i have seen some spits with a vent filter on the line to keep debris out.....one creative gent made his plug into the inside of his air filter housing just to keep things neat.....

not so much dangerous...more like a possible place for gas odors...why they were connected to the cardon canisters....

On my car that hose is connected to one of the two carbon canisters by the radiator.

That clamp was probably for the 'restrictor'. The restrictor was connected in line to that section and also to another section that went to the carbon canister... like the 72 thru 76 TR6
