MGB 78 MGB Thermostat

Guys, is it tricky to change the thermostat on a 78 MGB? I am only mildly adept at mechanical owrk, but I have changed a few things under the hood. Should I get the standard thermostat?

Thanks,

Larry Wells

Get the standard thermostat & a new gasket...pretty easy - remove upper radiator hose, 3 nuts & the housing comes loose (unless your DPO put a whole tube of Permetex on the lips)...then, its just reverse to reassemble.

Tony is right, unless you still have the smog equipment on your car. In that case, you would have to add in two more steps: loosen air pump (below the air pump), and remove the air pump from the thermostat housing.

When I removed the thermostat housing from my car, I found it somewhat difficult to break free. If this happens, once the nuts are loose you can strike it with a rubber hammer (or other suitable object). This got it off easily for me.

The most annoying part was getting the coolant into a bucket neatly--hard to do without a radiator drain plug. (I let it leak out the top of the loosened hose.)

Anyway, should be easy to do.
