78 1500 Midget Trans Question

I am replacing the clutch plate and pressure plate along with throw out bearing, pushrod and pin and a few other goodies while I'm in there.

My question is the front oil seal on the trans shaft. Vic Brit says after a certain trans number that there is a front oil seal and an external O ring. 59163-60000 and 65225 on. GAN 6

As my car is a 78, I am wondering if the later year cars were finally fitted to minimize leakage or do I have an old trans in my car. I know some work was done on it in this area. Can anyone explain why this change was made? Just curious.

I can't answer your question expertly, but I can tell you that my 79 trans does not have the front seal.
