My instinct tell me that it's a homemade external oil feed for the rocker shaft, based on its placement. Just not as pretty as the braided stainless lines.

If I'm looking at this correctly, it looks like a bodged up oil pressure gauge hose.
A proper connection is via a very slim plastic hose going to the oil gauge in the dashboard.

Whoo.....that is one ugly looking connection. I hate to say it, but if anything down there lets loose or breaks, bye-bye oil pressure. I'd work on getting that fixed properly asap.

I am assuming that his DPO had no need for an oil pressure switch. He probably was a real old timer who "ran by the gauges" and didn't need no darn idiot lights......

Wow, fellas, that was quick!

I found the slim hose to the oil gauge in a fitting behind the fuel pump, in a straight line from the first fitting... car seems to have great oil pressure.

So, what should I do with this kluged fitting? Stick a couple of bolts in both ends? Thanks, all!

My memory may be wrong, but I think the fitting on the block is 1/8"pipe thread. You could just use a brass plug there. The one on the back of the head was either 3/8" or 5/16" x 24, and required a flat headed plug with a copper washer for sealing. Best to pull them out and verify the thread configuration before trying a bolt or anything else.
I wonder if the reason for the external line was originally lousy oil flow to the rockers.
