MGB-GT '73 MGB GT - Cryin' Darn Shame

I'm in the process of parting out an 87K original miles, 1-owner GT that doesn't have a straight or rustfree panel on its body - heck, not only are the sills rusted but the cross-members & trans frame rails are also....was owned by an old guy & his family just left it sitting out in the yard where it was banged by lawnmowers for years after his death...I bought it for the OD & Webastos sunroof.

But, there's not been a bolt turned on this thing since it left Abingdon other than normal maintenance! The starter still had its rubber cover & looking inside at the teeth, its like new! Radiator still had the long fiber 'washers' between it & rad surround! Shifter still has original sleeved bolts w/spring washers & the little 3/8" nut on side of trans to hold shift lever tight! I don't think the calipers had ever been taken off the rotors! Wire wheel hubs look like no wear!

MAN!!

This one's so original that its actually a joy (albeit sad) to disassemble things.....

I'll have to rebuild/recover the sunroof but I'll use it in my '74-1/2 RB GT; OD will go in one of my cars next time one of them needs a clutch!

Am going slow on this disassemble what with my bad shoulder & the humidity...have a huge fan blowing right on me, a tent cover over the car outside the garage & am still soaking wet!

I shudder to think this could happen to my cars after I'm gone....

Its sad when people refuse to let go of cars out of sentimentality. So many really nice cars just set around and get assimilated into the local environment. I know where a 65 Mustang one owner car is right now. The lady that bought it new refuses to sell it. She has had it under a little shed for over 30 years. Probably been that long since it was driven. What a waste.

Regards John

Same issue with my 74 GT. Very low milage and tons of rust. Everytime I took something off I kept saying, "I can't believe she parked it in the woods."

I keep thinking I need an A/C and heated area for storage, but then I won't be around in 20 years I expect.

I actually like working outdoors - just need to concrete the little area behind the garage & build a carport-style flat roof over it!

Well, cut the roof off the GT today & turned it over to remove the headliner...DARN! all the Webastos sunroof's wood is ....still works though - turn handle & it releases & slides, handle still locks it...I'll stand the roof with throttene sunroof in it under a shed until I get a chance to price new wood from the UK!
