This sounds too simple of a problem.....when I pull out the choke button...... it just slides closed the moment I release it. I've tried de-greasing the stem but it does not help. As I am new to the car, what is supposed to keep the choke open....it obviously has a spring return...thanks for sharing thoughts'....Ed

Ed - I'm pretty sure you turn the knob 90 degrees to "lock" the cable into one of several positions.

If the lock is worn out, you may want to get a new knob/cable - or just do what many folks do: put a wooden clothespin on the cable, between knob and instrument panel. That'll keep the knob and cable out, until you remove the clothespin.

That’s right, Nutmeg has it right. You pull out the choke and rotate the knob. Rotating the knob locks the cable in place.

I'm not certain about original TR6 choke cables (and edkap2002 didn't mention original); but on original TR3 cables, there is a brass half-moon shaped piece that wears out. With persistence, you can cut a new piece and replace it.

But the lock being too weak was apparently a problem even on new cars. John Macartney (who worked as a salesman at Standard-Triumph for many years) used to pass out "Genuine Triumph choke retainers" (which were just spring clothespin with a bit of string) with his book "In the Shadow of my Father"

BTW, if you can find a copy at a reasonable price, ITSOMF is an entertaining read. But not worth $40 IMO.
