Spitfire '72 Spitfire - Original Grille Color?

I removed the grille from our project '72 Spit today. I was actually working on cleaning up the front wiring, installing a replacement horn and a couple of other things.

I cleaned the grille to repaint it while it was off. I uncovered many layers of paint, mainly different glosses of black. When I got near the bottom I found "silver". Below the silver was bare plastic.

I'll probably have to fix some blemishes on the grille and therefore, I'm likely to paint it satin or bumper black. However, this got me wondering. What WAS the original color of the grille on a '72? Was the silver factory applied or was it from a previous owner?

My 71 was (is) black plastic.

Black plastic.

My '72 GT6 is Black Plastic

Thanks all. Black plastic is the consensus so I won't suffer any guilt painting it black.
