I know it's an atrocity to put an American V8 in one of these, but for the money, ~THIS~ seems like a great deal.
 
I would be very wary about a converted car like this. I don't think you can fit a V8 without cutting up the front subframes. Jag is very specific about not cutting welding or anything else to the subframes, and it could weaken the car a lot. Replacements in your hands are over 2K, painting and fitting extra. However, 4.2s are not hard to come by, and the 2+2s can take the jag 4 speed w/ overdrive trannies... Still a cheap way into an E type, just be aware of what you are really getting
 
I have a Peterson book in the garage, in which they cover a XKF (Ford-powered XKE) done in the 70's by a Boeing engineer. Bolt-in, nut-and-bolt reversible, either a 289 with Ford 4-speed or a 289 with Jag 4-speed.
I kept it all these years because it shows it can be done without welding on the frames.
If I had to have any other engine in a Jag besides stock, it would be a Ford. Period.
And a 289 would be my first choice.
302 is close enough, but a 289 is better.

As Dave said, you can put a V8 (prefer the Ford 289 or 302) in an XKE with no problems and without any cutting or welding to the subframes. Years ago, a local Doctor had a S1 roadster with 302, it drove and handled well. Considered doing it to a 2+2 I had at the time with a bad motor. If this car was S1, I probably would have already looked at it. I do like a S1 coupe.
