T-Series 70 BGT - Brakes, wheel bearings, etc

So the big project of the day was to redo the brakes on my GT.

Starting out by smushing the bottom of the radiator wasn't part of the plan.

I got the rotors off and took them into the machine shop and the machinist told me I was being a WUSS and that I should just put my new pads on and they would be fine.

OK - so you never can be too careful with brakes I figure.

I brought them home and of course couldn't remember which side was which.

The pass side went on without a hitch, seemed perfect.

The Driver side was not so nice. When I removed the driver side the nut was really tight - in fact I had to go out and find a 1 1/8 socket to fit so I could get the hub removed.

There were several thin washers on that side between the outer bearing and the race. This made it so the bearing no longer would seat on reinstall. I had to remove them so the bearing would go all the way in.

Is this just a case of someone in the past getting them wrong and using spacers to 'make it fit'?

It fits right now.

Oh - the PO included several boxes of parts, and in there were some brand new pads  YAY!!!

So I bought some new grease and that's all that part of the job cost me.

Now to repair the radiator damage I caused when I started the brake work. Geeze - I spent from 9AM to 8PM on the B today!

I love those videos.

Thanks Steve, it never fails - even though I know he's there I never go looking for him when I have a question. I really should.

That exactly answered my questions!
With all the shims in I had a definite TUNK - I took shims out until it stopped. I did however tighten the nuts wrong, I will have to go back and put 60 pounds on each.

When I removed them the pass side was loose and the driver side tight (I had to get a socket to fit and thought this was wrong).
Now I find the drivers side was right and the pass side wrong!

My 10 year old son Peter and I worked on it all day.
We took both sides off, put the right spacers in the pass side until it was right according to Mr Twist.

Then the drivers side.

Funny thing, we had the right number of spacers, but I have no idea if they are the same ones that I took out from each side.
Sometimes it just works out that way!

Then we removed the radiator.
The valve was wide open, that's why there was the stream coming out right at first - no big hole at all.
I did a little pressure test & nothing was coming out.
So I filled it with water, again nothing leaking out.

We put it in the car, bolted it down connected the hoses & filled it... drip... drip... drip... :wall:

I started it up & drove it a few miles, warmed it up.
No leak. Let it sit for a while then added a little water to the radiator.
Drove home - no leak.

What I surmise:
It leaked right around the drain valve. There must be a washer between it and the bottom of the radiator that's damaged, so that it does leak when there isn't much pressure but seals up when there is more pressure.
Make sense?

Where can I get a few more of the shim washers if I decide I need them, as I think of it I'm not totally pleased with the drivers side. It felt a little tight and I know it should spin freely. I was thinking it was just the new brake pads, but the pass side wasn't like that.
Would NAPA have these, are they a standard kind of thing?

They're specific to the car, NAPA likely isn't going to list 'em by application. Varying thicknesses are available, I'd be for getting them thru Tony from Moss. Path of least resistance.

You ~could~ try and locate different thicknesses of steel shim stock, Grangier or McMaster-Carr p'raps. But then you'd have to cut them out accurately... feh. Buy an assortment of sizes thru Tony and move on.

Thanks Doc - Good plan.

Or keep collecting parts cars and spare font ends that people leave out at the curb. You'll have plenty before you know it.

I keep trying, but I get a lot of static from the crowd here.
Something about 'fixing up the ones you've got' first.

Oh well, the guy a NAPA thought it was an amusing call - but I had to try.
