I have a friend ready to sell his coupe. My wife & I have been watching this car for over 10 years. They are now ready to sell.

It has covered headlamps, is in good driving condition with a 15 year old paint job. The only thing that is not stock is a BMW 5speed that is 10 years old. This car has been driven all over america & has 170,000 mile on the original engine.
The engine is leaking & using oil badly & needs a rebuild.

Could I get some value guesses? I want to buy this car badly but I need to offer & pay a fair price.

If i am wrong about the year but i am going by memory.

If it's presentable, meaning the paint, trim and interior aren't worn out and it's not missing obvious bits I say that upper teens to 20k is fair. This is considering that an engine rebuild, which isn't cheap, is in the near future. And at 15 years old and it seems regularly used the paint and exterior trim is probably starting to show it's age. Depending on what you want out of it I could see another 20K+ ot make a top notch car which would put it in line with good, but not perfect, restorations.

But be aware that witout being able to see it and check everything there could be hidden expensive work necessary that you and the current owner is unaware of that could affect this guess.

If it has covered headlamps it's either not a '68 or it has had headlamp covers retrofitted. Not a big deal, but things like this do influence value.

Pricing is always difficult to determine since real private owner transactions are not of public record. If it is an original covered headlight car it is a '67 or earlier series I and worth more than if it is not an original covered headlight car (Series 1 and a half or a series a II which from very late in 67 and on). Be careful of auction prices, they do not reflect private owner transactions of even very nice drivers, but prices with buyer and seller commissions of cars that from the name auctions are far and above the typical driver, at least cosmetically. Since the coupe is worth 30-50% less than the roadster and if it is a '68 or older and needs an engine rebuild, (get a price from a quality Jaguar shop)you may want to hold the line at 15K. If it is a '67 or earlier nice driver quality car and not a well-done restoration, you might want to have 30K as the total with a motor rebuild. Check Hemmings and other sites for realistic private-party asking prices. The mileage is huge for a Jaguar, from the complex rear-end of shocks and joints to discs as well as same for front-end steering/suspension this may be one for a mechanic to look over, good luck.

Agree totally. Unless you know these cars well, there are subtle things you can miss which can cost baskets of money to rectify. Do some asking around with the sportscar owners' organizations in the area, don't just use the "yellow pages" approach to finding someone to inspect it.

The prime caveat on E-types especially is if you see rust or rust bubbles, it rusts from the inside out, and that part is shot.

Have someone who knows Jags - especially ETypes look it over. They are great cars, but many many gotchas can be lurking under the bonnet!

Got a chance to drive it Saturday. I seems like a nice car with a few rattles & clunks. It has not been driven much in the last 6 months so I was nice to it.

We made an offer based on the opinions found here. We will know in a day or to.

Thanks everyone. If we succeed, I will post a couple of pics.

Inspection....be well worth the money!!!!!!

We pulled the trigger. A little more than we wanted to spend but....
I know an inspection is definatly called for.

The one pictured does not have covered headlights, so is 1968+. It looks beautiful in the picture.

Retrofitted with UNsafety knock-offs. Yup.
