67 master cylinder conversion

i searched previous posts and couldn't find what i was looking for. since i am overhauling the brakes, is it recommended that the master cyclinder be upgraded to a dual system? i have never really had a problem with the existing system other than worn brakes and i don't race. i believe i was told that an upgrade would require some modification to the pedal box. i intend on replacing almost the entire system for safety reason but with a single cyclinder, it's only as strong as it's weakest link.

It is a duel system, brakes and clutch in one casteing????

FWIW, the UK based midgets didn't switch to the dual line until the late 70's. I think I would stay with a single line system.

no its single brake cyclinder and separate clutch. the two mount next to each other in the box

But with adequate maintenance, you should have no sudden failures. If you plan on neglecting the car, then a dual line might be beneficial to install at this point. But... it is just my opinion.

no neglect here, only opportunity to modify before i spend to much going original.

But for street use why bother unless it just takes your fancy, single break systems have been on the street for a 100 years and seem to work fine.

Did not notice the '67, sorry.

well, then i got the answer i was hoping for. i am not about modifying my sprite unless there is a solid reason. since the majority of the forum members are active drivers, i wanted to make sure i got their opinion. i guess i will stay single /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif (actually happily married w/4 boys)

just check UPS and some VB goodies have arrived at my doorstep. looks like a good night ahead!

I rebuilt the brake system on my 67 ... 18 months ago. I used the master cylinder from Moss... perfect fit and function... but form is not the same, it's a plastic thing with a see-thru fluid housing. However, it works great and I am sure it's a lot better than the original. I drive my 67 about 20 miles a day.. every day... five miles to the park and five miles back.. twice a day for my run. This little jewel has never let me down. She gets the looks... is fun to drive... and great gas mileage. Restoration was a long process... but how rewarding!!
