'67 AUSTIN-HEALEY DASHBOARD RE-CONSTRUCTION

Hello all, This is a new member asking for advice from anyone who has torn out the entire dashboard of his BJB and now seeks to replace it with new bits. Which comes first, the chicken or the egg? Do I assemble the two, outer, wooden pieces and the upper-central console out of the car and insert them afterwards or what? Lookin' forward to some helpful assistance please. Best, IAN GAIL.

Just did that job about 4 months ago. I put the dash together ( three pieces) on my work bench and then installed. Play close attention to where the original screws went on the dash. You have a little wiggle room when reinstalling. The wiring will kinda fall in place after you have installed.

Marvin! Long time no see! When is your wife comeing to Albuquerque or Santa Fe so I can see her again? (sing, I mean  ).

Re: '67AaUSTIN-AEALEY DASHBOARD RE-CONSTRUCTION

Welcome Ian,
Definitely assemble the three dash pieces before installing in the car. The tiny screws that attach the wood dash to the center console are a real bear when you're laying in the footwell. Next to impossible if you're using stainless screws (they don't stay on a magnetic screwdriver).

Note I have moved this thread to the Austin Healey forum

Basil,

I'm still lurking. Karen and I have been busy. She's not getting to sing as much as she would like. The economy has hit the musical arena as well. She usually is singing two to three times a week this time of year but only has 3 big parties booked this year.

I just finished a GMB BJ8 Austin Healey. If I can figure out how to send picture I will. It took about 1200 hours of labor but it was a rough car. Just bought another to do, maybe it won't take as long.

Merry Christmas.

PS, sorry to hear about Dave, I did not know him but I did see a lot of his posts. He seemed to be pretty sharp.

Assemble the 3 parts (wood and centre) with glovebox behind and brackets, the brackets may need moving to centre the dash a little, but bear in mind there are brackets hanging in the centre of the shroud top for fixing the centre metal part, and 1 bracket each side for the wood parts, heres some pics of the original gloebox fixings:

and some shroud top showing fixing brackets under:

and assembled dash:

The black curved brackets on the side of the dash have a fixing bolt that will go throught the inner wing / A panel but has the vinyl kickpanel sandwiched between it.
Dont make the same mistake I did when covering the centre metal panel with vinyl and cut the slots in the pull / push heater holes too far as these are not covered with an escutcheon.
cheers Andy
