'65 Sprite, Master Cylinder Rebuild Problems

Gents,

I can not get the internal components out of the cylinders. I poured mystery oil in and let it sit for a few days. I was able to then get them to push in skightly, but even with air I can't get them to move out. Any suggestions or will I have to replace the master? Where do I get a reconditioned one?

Welcome to the forum. There is a forum here for "Spridgets" that is devoted to these neat little cars. Maybe someone from there will pick this up. Some very knowledgeable folks there.

You should be able to wiggle the piston back & forth with persistent application of alternate air & hand pressure. If you can get any movement at all it should gradually work out. What ever you do, don't damage it. There may be cheaper sources or a good used one somewhere but Moss Motors for example appears to want around $425 for a new cylinder.

Sometimes, adapting the outlet to a grease gun fitting & using the healthy hydraulic pressure of the gun will force it out. I might even consider drilling & tapping the piston & inserting a bolt for a handle.

I'll leave it to the folks who really know.

I have a '72' master I'd like to sell. It's the wrong style for my '62'.

A 72 master cylinder is for the dual line brake system on later models and doesnt operate the clutch.
Walter i emailed you about the cylinder, Is it new? I know it will work on my '68.

The master cylinder is used. It came out of a '72' parts car. The plastic reservior was full when I took it off, so I assume it works. But I can't gaurantee it.

I have used the "grease gun" method many times for freeing stuck brake cylinders (both master and slave). It works very well and is MUCH safer than using air. If you are using air with a lot of pressure (which you will need to move the piston), you could get seriously injured when that piston flies out. With grease, it won't fly. This is due to the fact that air is compressible, and grease is not.

Some mystery oil, PB Blaster, heat, time, and air got both pistons and springs etc. out. I covered the bore openings with a towel to prevent the parts from flying and damaging them or me. Lots more questions to come.
