Spitfire '65 Spitfire MKII tranny pblm

Took Scarlet for a spin in today's gorgeous Virginia weather with no problems until I got home and tried to back into the garage.

Car would not shift into reverse, although I did back out of a parking lot at a stop on the trip.

Car still drives and shifts through all four forward gears but when I try to shift into reverse it goes into a forward gear. Not sure which one but no higher than 2nd and probably 1st - I didn't try to do anything more than nudge it in what should have been reverse.

There is no gear grinding and the shifter goes through the motions of shifting into reverse but it's not engaging the reverse gear.

No excessive leakage under tranny but I haven't checked the tranny gear fluid level lately.

Anybody have any ideas?

The reverse gear slider arm pivot bolts to the passenger side of the tramsmission just below the top cover. The nut holding this pivot arm is on the outside of the case. I suspect that this nut has loosened up or fell off allowing the arm to slip out of the shifting rod slot. Your car would seem to be in 1st gear if this was the case. You will have to remove the top cover in order to get the arm back in the slot. The pivot arm is located inside the transmission.
