MGB 64 MGB starter won't fit

So I got a remanufactured starter from the local auto parts store, a Beck & Arnley unit. For the life of me I can not get it to go in and it seems like the case is too long because the back corner is hitting the dip-stick boss on the block.

Anyone know any tricks to getting this dang thing in?

The old one came out just fine.

Are you certain its not for a later MG?

Turns out it was for somehing earlier. Case was stamped 6 55 so what is that from? perhaps a TF?

Anyway the nice guy Paul at Sportscar Craftsman showed me an original starter, pointed out the stamping on my "reman" and the difference was obvious. I bought a good used starter from him and it slid into place fine and started the car right up.

Now to get my money, and core, back from the auto parts store.

Lots of luck on the core.

The store should still have it. If they don't, they will either have to get it for you or give you the core charge back. I work for an auto electric rebuilder, and we run into this every now and then. In the future, never turn in your old core until you are sure the the new item you purchased is correct and works properly. It means shelling out more money in the begining and having to make a return trip with the core, but it could save you some grief down the road.
