62 Sprite help needed on engine and vin

I'm looking to buy my first Healey. It's a '62 Sprite. The engine is Red? Is that possibly original, or shouldn't it be green? How do I confirm that the engine and tranny are original to the car? Car is being represented as original.
Any help decoding the VIN would be appreciated.

VIN is listed as HAN6L1100S.
I know that HAN6 means it's a '62 sprite with the 948 engine, but don't know what the rest means.

Supposedly the car has an oil leak and the engine smokes "on start up" and "under full accelleration". I'm going to look at it this weekend. Any tips?

Really looking forward to owning this starter roadster!(I'm sure it will get addicting, and next thing I know, I'll have a 3000!)
 
The engine's been painted, but if the price is right it might be ok regardless of originality. Plan on an engine rebuild. You might try the Spridget forum with this.
 
Where are you located in Cincinnati?

I would guess that it does not have the original engine. Look for an engine tag riveted to the block just below no.1 spark plug. If the tag is still there, and it is the original tag, the tag info. will help in identifying the engine.

You might have better luck posting your question on the Spridget forum. I lurk in both forums due to having both models.
