i took the car out for a drive and it quit on me after a few minutes and wouldnt start back up. i checked the fuel pump and it works. i changed out the coil and that isnt it. i had just put some 30W oil in the carbs because they were low but didnt think that was the problem. i shot starting fluid in the carbs but nothing. i checked the plugs and they are fine. i am guessing it must be either the points or condenser but they were replaced about 1000 miles ago/6 months ago. any other ideas?

Sounds like a problem that i had last summer! Ok... Are your spark plugs black and fouled? Mine where, and not much of a spark at the plugs, A weak orange spark. I ended up changing the coil,condenser, rotor, cap, wires, one item at a time to find the problem part! Nothing worked! But when i changed everything all at once, points,coil, condenser,cap and rotor. It ran perfectly! and still does after 2000 miles. I still suspect i had a bad set of points! I only had 2000 miles on my faulty tune up parts! When i get time i will get out my meters and check out the old parts! Also check the connectors and wire that leads from the distributor to the coil.. If i remember, it is white with a black tracer. Check all the simple things first!

Probably too obvious but check the kill switch in the trunk ground wire. They come loose and if they ground out you will not start it again.

I agree with Bighealeysource. This exact thing happened to me. Plus it is cheap and easy to check.

Problem turned out to be a loose wire between the coil and the distributor.
