Fifth gear in my M Rdstrs (99 & 01) is 1:1 direct direct drive. Some people have swapped in 6-speeds from the E-36 M3 Evolution (European model).
Even though I dropped the final drive from 3.15:1 to 3.73:1 in the 01, I still don't feel the need for a 6th gear.
However, my wife's new X5 (383 miles on it as of last night) has taken transmission ratios to a new high; eight (8) speed automatic! I'll give a better impression of it once it has enough miles on it to be considered broken in, and I can put my foot in it :angel:
