January 26th, the company I worked for "restructured" and "graduated" 1900 of us. I'm a member of the "1900 Club".

I've had tremendous success with phone screens, interviews and on-site interviews but haven't secured a position yet.

I am a packaging engineer - boxes, bags, displays, etc. BS in Packaging Science, 18 years of experience, win consistent awards for my designs.

Anyone out there know someone who knows someone?? Totally open to relocation.

Thanks guys!

Good luck also. It is tough out there, but i am sure you will be able to bag one soon.

Hi Peter,

Sorry to hear about your "Seperation"! When I got "Seperated"; (Don`t you just love that term); The Co. I was employed with (Nearly 20yrs) said, (On Paper), This is a contract for a "Mutual Seperation"! Mutual my butt!

Anyways; I rec`d. a 2yr severance with Full Pay & Medical. I went Golfing at that point! I was a young "58" and 2yrs. later started hunting for a job. Well; If you think there`s no "Age Discrimination" out there; I`m living proof there is!

2yrs went by & no replies from anyone in the country. Finally; A "Start-Up" Co. came along & I went to work for them at 1/3rd pay & no benefits.

Morale to this story is "Age Discrimination" in the work force exists & exists "Big Time"! What age bracket are you?

Best Wishes,

Russ

Peter -

While I don't know their complete timetable, the big news here is the Hemlock Semiconductor plant, due to open next year. They held a job fair last fall; here's the link to that:

Let me know if you need any other info, and I'll see what I can dig up.

I am 58 and yes there is age discrimination when looking for a job
and there is no way to hide it,

I had to go completly out of my field to secure a job recently.

Pete's a young pup - he'll score soon, I reckon!

sorry to hear about that Peter,
Have you looked into any of the engineering contract services? I don't know anything about them, but Boeing hires alot of people as contractors. there are several here, all at or past retirement age.
Regards
Mark

Here's a link to the current job postings at Hemlock.

Peter-

There's a PCA (Packaging Corp of America) plant about half a mile from my office. They're a pretty large outfit. Have you tried their website?

Ditto on the Age Discrimination thing. Rif'd at 55 from one position, went back to old company I'd left 2 years previously and RIF'd again at age 58, Telecommunications Industry as a Project Manager. 6 Months without but for past 2 years working as a contractor in IT for one of the largest banks in the country. Contract due to be renewed next month for another year. Drawback is the 200 mile daily commute from Dayton to Columbus and back. It's amazing what you do at this age to keep cash flow intact. I try to work VO at least once a week just to keep energy levels up and employer realizes they are paying me for experience and getting the job done vs. warming a chair in the office. It's the age and experience working smarter vs. youth and bravado thing. Good luck in finding gainful employment.

Thanks for all the recommendations and well wishes! I actually meant to place this in the Pub - oops! Mickey, if you're the moderator, can you move this?

Ralph, got your PM, thanks! I'll be sending a reply ASAP.

The thing that's been most deflating is what I have called "Local Guy Syndrome". I've interviewed for three jobs where I was a top candidate but in the end lost out to the local guy. Of course I understand the costs involved for relocation and appreciate the economics of the situation. Doesn't make it any easier though.

Thanks again guys! (guys meant generically of course! )

The amazing thing about age discrimination is that the "entry point" is lowering every year! I am sitting here with three college degrees and 30 years experience. I'm 54 and have never been better at what I do. Yet, I am well aware that where I am at (yes, employed...lucky) is where I will be (God willing) for the rest of my working career. Little to no chance of me picking something up elsewhere. Sobering thought, as I spend my day training and correcting the mistakes of younger workers around me.

Either Nial or Basil will have to do that; I'll send them a note.

Good luck Peter, these are bad times indeed. I can tell from your posts that you are bright, creative, and inventive. Now your resilience comes into play. You may need to repackage yourself in a more flexible container that showcases both your brilliance and creativity along with your capabilities and experience. The standard resume/interview shtick just doesn't cut it anymore. This move you have made by casting about in places like this forum may be just what you need. Sometimes the packager must think out of the box. There are many other careers out there for individuals with your breadth and knowledge. I don't know you from Adam but will canvas my friends in advertising, P.R., merchandising. etc. I have many friends of all stripes in diverse areas of the economy. They all need to effectively package their products. Times are tough, I depend upon Providence to supply my sustenance, and she has found me work for years. We carpenters change our jobs all the time as a matter of course, and must remain upbeat, available and flexible at all times. You will succeed and prosper. --elrey

Better you than me on that smooth wall. I hate doing that

Peter as you know I am in the same boat and it's not fun.
I hope something will come your way soon. As you know I was in Chicago in Nov. to attend a job fair... as I looked around the room I realized I was a dinosaur amongst young kids out of school. Hang in there Peter!!

Walgreens just bought one of the local health clinic's pharmacies here in central illinois.

The are closing 4 pharmacies and keeping six open (at this time.)

They've stated that they plan on keeping 80% of the workforce, meaning 19 pharmacists (80% of the current work force) will be applying for their own jobs. Walgreens will also interview current company pharmacists for the positions as well as outside parties. So there aren't any guarantees.

Some of these pharmacists have been with the clinic 30 or more years ....

Life ain't fair, and there are certainly no guarantees in life anymore, except that life ain't fair.

Peter, I wish you the best luck possible in sourcing a new position! (You, too, Elliot!)

Thanks Rick... it's appreciated!
