Hi Dave - back before standardization, many state DMV offices would take whatever number they found on the car (frame, tag on the firewall, etc.) and use it as a VIN. Many US states back then had different VIN formats, and that's what shows up on the state title form. In those days, each car company had its own "VIN" system too.

If your title has six numbers which match some other six numbers on the car, then it's probably "right". Each country has its own VIN system. Used to be each US *state* had its own VIN system.

Hope this helps.

If the 6 digit VIN on your title starts with 22 then it's probably your engine number. I have seen two BN1s here in Oregon where the title shows only the 6 digit engine number, even though the actual engine number starts with "1B" and ends with an "M". Back in the fifties, engine numbers were a big deal.

No. It's your VIN. It's the serial number of your car and the engine. They are the same. That's the number on your title. Engine (and chassis) numbers from January 19555 through December 1955 started with 222600 and ended with 229654.

You should order the Heritage Certificate for your car.

So the car came today and the only tag was on the motor,it has been repainted, the motor must have been removed but none of the vin plates were put back.think it would be ok to order a blank plate. From your post and others .I think I know the vin
