50 years of saftey progress

That's a very flawed test. Putting two dissimilar cars into a collision is no way to determine their level of safety. Put two Malibus together like that that there would be far more damage to the Malibu and more injury to the occupant. Put two Bel Airs together and I suspect "instant death" would not happen.
