5 speed conversion for the 1500cc midget

I am in the process of restoring/upgrading a Triumph Estate Wagon, aka Triumph 10 or Standard 10.

The original engine is still in the car, which is the 948cc grandfather to the 1500cc engine that got put in the spitfire and the later midgets. Same block and external dimensions.

The question I have of the MG community is: Has anyone had any success mating a nissan or toyota 5 speed tranny to their 1500cc midget?

Apparently, the Ford Sierra gearbox can be used.
This is often referred to as the Ford "T9" and was used in the "Mercury Merkur" in N. America.

Here's a link to some info about this:

Personally, I'd say the Spitfire overdrive trans would be easier to do, since it's almost a bolt-in.

Obviously, the Triumph area at BCF would also be a good source of info.

Bill Hedrick of Chicagoland installed a Nissan 5-speed into his chrom bumpered Midget several years ago.

Chrome-bumper is "A" motor (mostly 1275 cc), not related to Triumph engine used in 1500 Midgets.
Different animal.

Yes...I understand that....the "merging of the marques"....(which is also why I stated that it was in a chrome bumpered model)... I was merely stating that the Nissan conversion had been done into a Midget...transmission hump concerns, etc. You would obviously need a kit or be able to adapt the rear engine plate of the 1500 to accept the Nissan tranny...as well as the obvious of flywheel and clutch disc.

Do you already have a Midget 1500 engine? If not, go for the 1275 - its a better engine with much more potential, IMHO.
