Moderate quake off Puerto Rico WASHINGTON - A MODERATE earthquake measuring 5.8 shook an area in the Caribbean Sea off the island of Puerto Rico early Sunday, but there were no reports of casualties or damage, the US government said.

The quake hit around 1:30 AM local time last nightand was felt throughout the entire island. We lost our power for about 2 hours. The late night party crowd (mostly NOT sober) thought it was the end of the world arrived!

Ha, ha, ha!!

Glad you and Wendy are OK!

Did you feel it much where you are? I was in Greece as a Site commander years ago when our area was hit by a quake. It was early in the morning and I was still in bed. I thought someone had come into my room and was shaking my bed to wake me up. It took me a few minutes to get my wits about me and realize that no one was in my room and that it must be an earthquake. It was a very strange feeling being moved about as if my some giant invisible hand.

GLad to know all is well in your hood Dale. I'd love to have heard those partiers carrying on like it was doomsday. that musta been comical.

Cool. hope you enjoyed the ride. 5.8 's a little one

tinster, glad to hear you guys are o.k., just the other night i watched a special about animals being able to sence/predict earthquakes, they talked about sea lions inexplicably disappearing from san fransisco bay just before an earthquake and the reaction of cats and dogs, i was wondering if you think back to that day/night if you remember noticing any different/unusual behavior on the part of your cats or other pets?. :savewave:

Welll... he did mention that all the party animals went crazy.......

That's like saying "minor surgery" - not so minor when it's on you! :eeek:

If they're centered out in the ocean,
they're not as strong as land-based ones.
And the pounding ones are much worse
than the swaying ones.

Yup Mickey! It was a ground based quake and R=5.8 is
a fairly stout shake. 50 miles deep, directly under the
town of Moca; NW corner of the island, near the old Ramey
Air Force base. No huge damage but lots of busted walls, windows, porches fallen off, broken dishes, few cracked roads..

Everyone I know that was awake felt it here in San Juan.
Basil:With my night meds, I slept thru it. It woke Wendy up and we lost our power for 2 hours. It also kicked over the koi pond aerator which promptly pumped the pond dry when the power came back on.

I designed 6" of survival water beneath the pump base. Unhappy fish in the AM; unhappy wife with 900 gallon of water to purchase.

The two cats could have cared less. Barely opened an eye.

best, thanks all for your kind thoughts.
