My mum was in tears at the news. She had known Grissom from his friendship with her first husband, at Edwards. Same thing with Joe Walker on 8 june '66. Her first husband augered in while flying a P-38, when laminar flow dynamics were not fully understood.
And like Nial, my heroes were aviators, test pilots and racing drivers.
