my after market aluminum radiator came with an 18psi cap.
i didn't realize it but because the radiator could not vent , the way it is suppose to, as with a 4psi cap, the increased pressure restricted the bellows thermostat from opening, thus increased my operating temperature up to approx 200 degrees because the coolant could not transfer from the engine to the radiator correctly.
i surmise, continued operation under those higher temp. circumstances would have damaged seals, gaskets & hoses, as well as not being good for the engine either.

Changing to a 5 psi cap fixed it. Took Randall's advice and found an older guy at NAPA that could think out of the box.
He found a NAPA Balkamp #703-1543; 5psi, with the right dimensions.
now running at a shade higher than 185. (About a 15 dg. reduction)The puller comes on intermittently, ( as opposed to coming on and staying on).

never would have figured that out on my own.
