40+ WW1 vintage subs located

Now *that* is amazing. From what I've read, WW1 subs were the most uncomfortable and dangerous forms of transport ever designed. Should be some interesting history inside them.

I wonder how they compare to Civil War subs as far as survivability.

Interesting point. The Davids, the Alligator, and the Hunley look like death traps; even the partial submersibles and ironclads were not for the faint of heart. Imagine being inside the gun turret of the "Monitor" when the cannon fired. All that pressure and sound directed right at the men inside.

I aint no expert, but I'm purty shore all them fellas on them WWI subs that went down are most prob'ly dead by now too jus' like them Hunley fellas. :peaceful:

the Hunley is still on my to do list
Uhhh, purty shore that ship has already sailed. Glad to see you're acclimatin' but we aint gonna let yew serve in'ner armed forces for a'while yet. Here's a little known fun fact' the last words of the Hunley's captain were, "Here, hold me beer and watch this..".:highly_amused:

Sort of a mixed feeling. On the one hand, you wanted to wipe the Hun from the face of the ocean. On the other, they were fellow Submariners, facing the same (or worse) conditions than you did.
There is a movie....Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster.....Up Periscope?
They nailed the Japanese sub killing our boats, one guy cheered and the rest stared him down.
Talking to guys who nailed Russkies during a Crazy Ivan, they weren't happy.
And it happened...but never officially.

That is one of the best scenes in submarine movies. I think it was a very new guy who did the cheering.

And the *best* submarine movie I know: "Das Boot". Fantastic.

Absolutely, without a doubt, the best submarine movie ever made. I've got a DVD that has the standard cut, the director's cut (which is about four hours long), and a German language cut, which is fun to watch.
