Well my sprite grille was in real bad shape, but nut bad enough that I couldnt make a template from a 2X8 and bang out an aluminum mesh grille....

Real nice - how'd you do the edges? & how'd you attach it?

I routered a 2X8 and rolled the edges over with a rubber mallet to try and give it some depth. (Not like a flat piece of metal.) Bottom attached with two push rivets, Top with 4 tiny cable ties. Good to go

Have you thought about painting the area behind it black?

Hey, kind of similar to mine (old picture below when it was on the street). Mine uses an old piece of stainless steel mesh a friend gave me. I kept the outer grill frame, but actually, I like your frameless idea better. Mine's held in with zip ties.

I'm giving the car a quick paint job this week (it'll be good for 40 feet at 90 mph  )
Tomorrow, I'll try to bend the grill back into some semblance of straightness...right now, it's bent like a pretzel.

I'm guessing you used the steel reinforcing mesh they put in ooncrete, right?

I actually like see all the goodies behind the grille.

Nial thats a piece of aluminum from Pepboys. Overpayed for something that is probably ony worth $5 from the right source. But they sell it as a make your own grilles for body kits. $39. Still better than an NOS grille. Plus if I keep my template I can always take it off and bang it out straight in case of the worst. (Of course than I have bigger probs.) I may take whats left tonight and make some smaller ones for the valance openings.

That looks great!! Reminds me of a grill I made for a BE using "hardware cloth" of 1/4" mesh which I then painted with a "chrome" spray-bomb. I trimmed the surrounding edge with a piece of chrome door-edge-protector. It looked great and I would have kept it on the car had I not come across a decent original grill!!

i made one last summer, looks good,
and yes ,ill be painting black
behind the grille as tony suggested. ....z
