4.2L distribitor drive distance/thrust washer

Hi
I'm rebuilding a'68 OTS Ser. 1.5 4.2 l and my problem is the Dis.drive distance washer. The book says there should be 4-6thou gap(?same as end float)
I'm reading around 20 thou. and there is visible movement. The adjacent bushing and drive gear don't show any wear 'tho the washer does .It is 0.117-8 thick and the shaft shoulder projects around 0.13-4th.The book seems quite concerned about too small a gap and I've had contact from someone whose drive seized at 4thou.My expert advice is that it's safe to just put it back together and the upper shaft will stablise it.Any thoughts? This item is discontinued by the usuals and I don't know where else to look
Cheers
